In response to months of growing public outrage over the nation's worst economic crisis in seven decades, thousands of protestors stormed the president's official mansion and his secretariat in Sri Lanka's commercial city Colombo on Saturday. Important decisions were made at the party leaders' meeting.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena presided over the party leaders' meeting today, which was attended by Dr. Harsha de Silva, an MP for Amagi Jana below (SJB). The following major decisions were made at the party meeting:


President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe must resign immediately. The Speaker will serve as President for a maximum of 30 days. Parliament will elect an MP to serve out the remaining term.

The President and Prime Minister must resign, according to the majority of party officials, according to Justice Minister Wijesedasa Rajapakshe. The Minister reportedly stated that party leaders had also concurred that the Speaker would serve as President for a week.


The party leaders, he claimed, had also determined that the Parliament should meet and create an all-party administration before choosing an acting president. However, the justice minister noted that the ideas had been rejected by the prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe.
